Women in STEM Event

Network Ireland West Cork is hosting a ‘Women in STEM’ event in The Whale’s Tail Bistro, The Waterfront, Clonakilty, Co Cork. The event will take place on Monday, April 29, 2019, at 6pm – 9pm and will focus on how women are making an impact in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Both members and non-members are welcome to attend.
The guest speaker for the event is Gillian Keating (pictured), Co-founder of I Wish (Inspiring Women in Stem) and Partner at Ronan Daly Jermyn. I Wish is an initiative to inspire young women to consider careers in STEM and in this way help address the skills gap. Members and guests at the networking event will also hear from Gráinne Bagnall of All Things STEAM, Niamh Shuley who works for the Department of Health in Brisbane and has over a decade of experience as a contributor to the Queensland Health system, and Jennifer McCarthy, 6th year student of Kinsale CS who will share her recent successes at BTYS, BT Business Bootcamp and her nomination to attend the finals of the JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons in May.
Speaking about the upcoming ‘Women in STEM’ event, Ciara Lucy, President of Network Ireland West Cork said, “It is a hugely important topic as traditionally studying or pursuing a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) was considered a man’s world. This is no longer the case. I was speaking to a local secondary school principal recently who said that there are now as many girls studying subjects like physics as there are boys.”
“Research conducted at University of New South Wales last year reviewed the academic grades of 1.6 million students of all ages across the world and showed that males and females scored similar grades in STEM subjects. There is a new STEM category in this year’s Businesswoman of the Year awards, which will take place on May 31 in Liss Ard Estate, and we have incredible entrants.” concluded Ms Lucy.
