University College Cork (UCC) student Róisín Moore from Ballyvolane in Cork has been awarded a Biotechnology Degree Scholarship by one of Ireland’s leading research-based pharmaceutical companies, Janssen Sciences Ireland UC, at a function held at the company’s Ringaskiddy site. The Biotechnology degree scholarship is designed to support students pursuing careers in biotechnology both financially and through providing opportunities for work placement.
Róisín was chosen as the winner of the scholarship award following a rigorous application process, which saw the selection of six finalists. The students were selected based on their academic results and an interview, which showcased their creativity, innovation and interpersonal skills.
Speaking on the students’ success, Kyran Johnson, General Manager of Janssen Sciences Ireland UC said, “We are delighted to partner with UCC to award the prestigious biotechnology degree scholarship. Janssen is committed to developing and implementing high impact strategies to support students pursuing careers in biotechnology.
“Scholarships can be an important first step to future employment for young people and Janssen Sciences Ireland UC has recognised this pathway and established this scholarship programme with UCC. Although choosing a winner was no easy feat, we’re looking forward to supporting Róisín and all of our finalists as they venture towards careers in biotechnology.”
Speaking on winning the award, Róisín Moore said, “I am thrilled to be awarded the Janssen / UCC Biotechnology Degree Scholarship. Having such an influential global player recognise my hard work and dedication to the biotechnology degree programme is very important to me. I’m looking forward to building a relationship with Janssen Sciences Ireland as I continue to study here at UCC.”
Dr David Clarke, Director of BSc in Biotechnology, UCC said, “At UCC we are proud to partner with a global healthcare leader such as Janssen. The scholarship gives students an opportunity to experience first-hand the working environment at one of Janssen’s sites along with a contribution towards their education. The collaboration between UCC and Janssen across a number of different areas continues to strengthen and we look forward to working closely with Janssen over the coming years.”
