RECRUITMENT– EMPLOYING THE RIGHT TEAM

WORDS: LIV MORGAN

Employers have a daunting task ahead of them when an employee resigns or a new position needs to be filled. This is where agencies can be worth their weight in gold.

On average you will spend 40 hours a week working. That’s around 1,920 work hours a year. This could be quite a daunting thought to some but most of you are doing what you love – that degree/diploma/apprenticeship you took has paid off.You followed your instincts and you’re working the hours you want, surrounded by supportive and friendly co-workers. The boss is more like a buddy than an employer and your salary? Well, you don’t want to boast but hey, no complaints there either!

Hmm, sounds too good to be true? Well for many perhaps the story isn’t so sweet. In the words of Dolly Parton “Workin' 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin', barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin'”. However in today’s world this doesn’t have to be the case. There are more choices out there now than ever befores for those who decide they want to pursue new career paths. Employers are beginning to see that in order to retain their highly skilled staff they have to step up to the platform and start offering more of the ‘lifestyle perks’ as well as the monetary kind.

Leading the way in style is the USA; companies have started to offer dry cleaning pick-up services, on-site professional chefs who cook gourmet lunches for the employees everyday, gym facilities, stress busting classes, the list goes on. The perks for working with a company such as Google in California can pretty much blow any other firm out of the water; a few things on offer include on-site haircuts, free doctor checkups, a climbing wall and a comfortable leather chaired shuttle bus to make commuting as painless as possible! It’s estimated that 1,200 employees (almost a quarter of the total) use the shuttle service.

So ladies its time to take action and think about the state of your employment! Although it will be years before we get the equivalent to the pampered treatment that American employees might enjoy, it is never too late to take the leap towards finding your dream job and making that work/life balance more attainable.
