WOMEN WHO LAUNCH
IN EVERY EDITION OF WMB, WE ARE COMMITTED TO ASSISTING WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS WHO HAVE RECENTLY LAUNCHED INTO THE BUSINESS WORLD

WORDS: LIV MORGAN

It’s a rare gift to be able to capture the essence of a person and their entire meaning in one image. But at Fusion Photography that’s what it’s all about.
The artistic eye behind the shutter is Jennifer Barker. One look over her work and you realise you’re not just dealing with any old snapper. In order for you to really know what Jennifer’s work is all about I highly suggest you log straight on to her website to look at the photo gallery (but I won’t give you those details just yet, read me first!). The award winning photographer can’t disguise her lust for the job. “I’m fascinated by people, I love their stories. People-watching is great I could do it for hours!” She exudes genuine fascination in her clientele.

Jennifer has worked as an award-winning photographer all over the world including at the Australian Centre of Photography. Having studied in the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art and Design she always had a passion for photography so it was a natural progression into a career. “It was more a hobbie to start with, all those years ago. Going to
college and studying it then opened my eyes to so many different areas but it’s when you get out into the real world that you realise what it’s really like and how difficult and different it can be.”

Having been in the industry for years, Jennifer has moved her passion for photography from being a college hobby to a serious income provider. Now she has delved further into the business side of things by setting up a studio in Sandyford just over a year ago. “I decided to set up because although I’ve been in the industry for years, I was always working for other companies and doing freelance work on the side. I had reached the stage where I was ready to take the leap and go out on my own.” Having grown up around Sandyford Jennifer was familiar with the area and with city centre parking being chaotic at the best of times, a studio in the Sandyford Office Park was a must. The luas line was an added bonus making the studio easy access for clients with children.

As the industry is exploding with creativity at the moment, Fusion has the upperhand. It’s contemporary approach to working with people makes it stand out in such a vast chameleon-like industry. Contemporary portraiture has been visible abroad and in the UK but it’s relatively new to Ireland. There’s interaction between people, natural expressions, spontaneous actions, and more stylised images. Its not posed or still and its very personalised to the individual. There’s different lighting to your traditional kind — its very flattering and allows Jennifer much more creative freedom.

Fusion has been marked as a contemporary portrait studio to date but Jennifer plans on bringing a few changes on board. “Its been a real learning curve so far, you have your plan and you stick to it and you refer to it and you change it slightly but I think after a year its nice to renew things. To be always moving forward is so important. But I know what I can achieve at this stage, I feel like I’ve got the right balance at the moment so I’m happy to slightly expand next year in the way that we will be advertising and marketing more for weddings and corporate events, not just in studio shoots.”
